It's Time for a Little Reflection on Refraction

In school, you learned that the speed of light is about 2.99792458 x 10 to the 8th meters/sec, denoted by the symbol c. Specifically, this is the velocity of light in a vacuum. The speed of light in other mediums is different - and slower. To describe this relative reduction in speed, we use the termindex of refraction or the symbol n. A medium's index of refraction is simply the ratio of the speed of light in a vacuum to the speed of light in that medium.
